We are launching a new initiative, our Monarch Butterfly Program, to raise funds for our programs while tackling a serious issue facing our world: the decline of the Monarch butterfly.
Every winter, monarch butterflies migrate up to 3,000 miles from Canada to the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico. But, over the past two decades, monarch populations have been decreasing, dropping to an all-time low of 0.004 square miles of butterfly-occupied forest measured in Mexico overwintering grounds in 2012, compared to 0.015 in 2010.
We can all help the Monarch Butterfly population recover by planting milkweed. Monarch caterpillars eat only milkweed. Therefore, butterflies only lay eggs on milkweed. You need milkweed growing to attract butterflies, and you will also need milkweed to feed the cats.
As a new fundraising program, our Monarch Butterfly Program will help spread milkweed and also support Talking Stick. We are selling milkweed seed packets through our new website, and asking each family to take home and sell 20 seed packs directly. The milkweed packets were purchased as a generous donation from two Talking Stick board members. That means that Talking Stick will receive 100% of the proceeds for each and every seed packet sold. So all the money raised will go directly toward supporting our excellent staff.
Please help if you can!
